There are several important resources for appraisers and consumers of appraisal services. Five resources are referenced below. All five are information and marketing aides for the real estate appraiser. For non-appraisers two of the resources provide licensing requirements for new appraisers. The references are also useful for appraisal customers.

DPOR – Appraiser Board

The Real Estate Appraiser Board is one of many Virginia regulatory boards under the Department of Professional Occupational Regulation. The Appraiser Board is responsible for regulating individuals and firms that estimate the value of real estate. Virginia has four license categories for individuals: Trainee, Licensed Residential, Certified Residential, and Certified General Real Estate Appraiser. When applicants complete the necessary pre-licensing requirements, the Real Estate Appraiser Board issues one of the four licenses. The board also processes appraisal license renewals as a real estate appraiser completes his continuing education every two years. AppraiserUSA is a national directory of real estate appraisers that is among the largest. Appraisers can obtain a free listing or they can pay to get a high ranking in the directory. Appraisal directories are also helpful to consumers. Someone searching for an appraiser can survey a consolidated list provided by the directory. The directory list will indicate the appraiser’s type of business and the cities and counties served.

Angie’s List is a paid review site to assist customers find contractors and professional services. It is a Yellow Pages-like service. Members pay a fee to access information on the website. Appraisers can obtain a listing on the site, subject to the company rules, and be reviewed by customers.

The Appraisal Foundation

The Appraisal Foundation is an independent institution responsible for promulgating standards and licensing requirements for real estate appraisers. It is recognized by the United States Congress as the source of these standards and requirements. It has no direct authority over real estate appraisers. Each state in the United States has an appraiser board that must incorporate The Appraisal Foundation standards and licensing requirements as the minimum regulations in their state licensing regulations. Most importantly, The Appraisal Foundation is responsible for the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
